Why I’m Moving to Chicago to Start a New Adventure

Introduction

I’m moving to Chicago.

Turning 60 has allowed me to evaluate life and consider new experiences that align with my and my wife’s goals. It’s the perfect time for me to embrace change and start a new chapter by moving to Chicago. After a lifetime in Los Angeles, I’ve decided to trade in familiarity for downtown Chicago’s vibrant, walkable lifestyle.

This move represents a change of scenery and an opportunity to live more fully and connect with what I’ve always wanted.

Reason 1: Embracing City Life in a Walkable Downtown

For years, I’ve dreamed of living in a city where walking isn’t just an option but a way of life.

Downtown Chicago offers everything I’ve imagined: access to restaurants, cultural events, and parks, all within walking distance. The city’s layout makes embracing a lifestyle centered around activity and exploration easy. Walking supports my health goals and fosters a deeper connection to the community and the environment.

As I focus on staying healthy and active in this next chapter of life, trading long drives for scenic strolls is truly exciting.

Reason 2: Seeking a Change After a Lifetime in Los Angeles

Having lived in Los Angeles my entire life, I’ve reached a point where I’m ready for something new.

Los Angeles is a city I’ve loved, but its sprawling layout and car-centric culture have started to feel limiting. The desire for a fresh environment has grown stronger, and Chicago offers exactly that. It’s a city with a distinct character—one that thrives on energy, history, and community.

This move is my way of stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing the unknown.

Reason 3: Being Close to Family

Family is at the heart of this decision, making it one of the most meaningful reasons for our move.

My stepdaughter and her fiancé live in Chicago, and my wife and I are thrilled at the prospect of being nearby as they start their own family. This proximity will allow us to actively share in their milestones and create lasting memories together. At the same time, we’re deeply committed to staying connected to my son and daughter in Los Angeles.

Looking ahead, when my children have families of their own, we plan to split our time between Chicago and Los Angeles.

Reason 4: The Energy of Chicago as a Friendlier Version of NYC

I’ve always been drawn to the energy of New York City—its hustle, culture, and undeniable vibrancy.

But as much as I admire NYC, Chicago offers a similar energy with a touch of Midwestern warmth that feels more my speed. Chicago thrives on its own dynamic rhythm while maintaining a friendly and approachable atmosphere. This balance of excitement and comfort makes it the ideal setting for this stage of my life.

For me, Chicago represents a harmonious blend of urban life and genuine connection, making it a place I’m eager to call home.

Reason 5: Experiencing Four Seasons for the First Time

Growing up in Los Angeles, I’ve never experienced the magic of four distinct seasons.

The idea of bundling up for a snowy winter or witnessing the renewal of spring has always fascinated me. Winter in Chicago offers a chance to embrace cozy traditions and truly appreciate the warmth of home. Meanwhile, the arrival of spring promises an exciting burst of color and energy as the city comes to life.

Experiencing these shifts will be a reminder to live fully and appreciate the beauty of each stage.

Reason 6: Building a Social Life in a High-Rise Community

Moving to a high-rise apartment in downtown Chicago presents a unique opportunity to meet new people and build a vibrant social life.

My wife and I love connecting with others, and we believe that living in such a dynamic environment will make it easy to find a sense of community. High-rise living offers shared spaces and events that naturally encourage interaction, from rooftop lounges to fitness centers. Chicago’s friendly and welcoming culture will further support our efforts to expand our social circle.

This chapter is about embracing new experiences and the people who make them memorable.

Conclusion

This move to Chicago is about more than just geography; it’s about embracing a new way of living.

From the walkable downtown lifestyle to being close to family and experiencing four seasons for the first time, every reason for this move feels aligned with what I want for this stage of life. While we’re excited to settle into Chicago, we’ll remain deeply connected to our loved ones in Los Angeles through regular visits and future plans to bridge the two cities.

I’m looking forward to sharing this journey with you through my blog as I explore everything Chicago has to offer.
