My Search in Downtown Chicago for the Best Neighborhood

When my fiancée and I decided to move to Chicago, we wanted a high-rise apartment in a neighborhood with walkability, great restaurants, and a vibrant atmosphere. But as of now, I don’t live there—I’m just getting started in my search, and this is my way of figuring out what’s out there.

While I enjoy a youthful vibe, late-night bar hopping isn’t my scene anymore (thank goodness—those days are behind me). Instead, I’m all about morning coffee shops, neighborhood strolls, and being close to exciting yet manageable energy.

Here’s a breakdown of the neighborhoods I’m researching, including the key apartments, restaurants, and bars, plus why I, as a 60-year-old, might want to live there. Later on, as I learn more, I’ll update this list with my actual experiences.

The Loop

the Loop

The Loop is the bustling heart of Chicago, where skyscrapers dominate the skyline, and cultural landmarks are at your fingertips. It’s the city’s business hub, with offices, theaters, and museums packed into its dense streets.

During the day, it buzzes with energy as professionals fill the streets, but at night, it quiets down considerably. This makes it an intriguing option—do I want to live somewhere that’s vibrant by day but eerily silent at night?

While The Loop lacks the traditional neighborhood feel that some areas offer, it makes up for it in accessibility. Everything is just a short walk or train ride away, whether it’s a world-class museum, a fantastic restaurant, or a lakefront stroll.

It’s also home to some of the best high-rises in the city, many of which come with amazing views and full-service amenities. The challenge is whether it will feel like a true home or just a convenient place to crash after exploring the city.

  • Walkability Score: 95 – You can accomplish most errands on foot.
  • Public Transit Score: 99 – Nearly every train line runs through The Loop, making it the most transit-accessible part of Chicago.
  • Key Restaurants:
    • The Gage – A classic American gastropub with a refined atmosphere and a solid beer selection.
    • Remington’s – A modern steakhouse with fresh seafood and handcrafted cocktails.
    • The Dearborn – A lively spot serving locally sourced American fare.
    • Revival Food Hall – A massive food hall featuring a mix of Chicago’s best independent restaurants.
    • The Berghoff Restaurant – A historic eatery serving hearty German dishes since 1898.
  • Key Bars:
    • Cindy’s Rooftop – A stylish rooftop bar with breathtaking views of Millennium Park.

    • FFC East Loop – A high-end fitness club with group classes and top-tier equipment.
  • Why I Might Live Here: The Loop is quieter at night, making it appealing for someone who loves daytime energy but values a peaceful home. But will it feel too business-oriented? That’s something I need to find out.

River North

River North is one of the most energetic and visually striking neighborhoods in Chicago. It’s a hub for artists, young professionals, and those who love a fast-paced, social environment. Known for its stunning architecture, high-end restaurants, and vibrant nightlife, it’s an area that never seems to sleep. While I love good food and a lively atmosphere, I’m curious if it’s a fit for someone who values peace and quiet at night.

The beauty of River North is its accessibility to everything you could possibly need. It’s filled with incredible dining options, from fine Italian cuisine to quick but delicious cafés. The riverfront views add an element of charm, and the neighborhood has a great balance of residential high-rises and commercial activity. The biggest question for me is whether the noise and fast-paced lifestyle will make it less livable in the long term.

  • Why I Might Live Here: River North’s dining scene is incredible, but will it be too noisy for my taste? I’ll have to visit to see for myself.

Streeterville

Streeterville offers a perfect blend of city life and lakeside living. Nestled between the Magnificent Mile and Lake Michigan, this neighborhood features stunning high-rises, easy access to the lakefront, and plenty of entertainment options. It’s home to Navy Pier, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and numerous high-end hotels, making it a well-developed and polished part of the city. The proximity to the lake is a huge plus, providing access to jogging and biking paths, as well as beaches—ideal for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities without leaving the city.

While Streeterville is undeniably vibrant, it has a calmer feel than River North. It attracts professionals, retirees, and those who want a mix of urban convenience and lakeside serenity. The downside? It can feel a little tourist-heavy, especially near Navy Pier. Still, for those who appreciate a neighborhood with plenty of luxury housing and excellent walkability, Streeterville is a strong contender.

  • Walkability Score: 94 – Almost all daily errands can be accomplished on foot.
  • Public Transit Score: 89 – Well-served by bus routes, but no direct CTA train line.

    • LA Fitness – A full-service gym with extensive equipment and group classes.
  • Why I Might Live Here: The lakefront access is a huge draw, and the quieter vibe compared to River North is appealing. However, I need to see if the influx of tourists around Navy Pier would be a deal-breaker.

West Loop

Once an industrial warehouse district, West Loop has transformed into one of Chicago’s trendiest and most sought-after neighborhoods. It’s the epicenter of the city’s food scene, featuring award-winning restaurants, bustling markets, and some of the best rooftop bars in the city. This area is known for its converted lofts, modern high-rises, and creative spaces, making it a hotspot for professionals, foodies, and entrepreneurs. The neighborhood is also home to Google’s Midwest headquarters, adding to its growing tech and business community.

Despite its popularity, West Loop maintains a distinct, laid-back vibe. Unlike the high-energy nightlife of River North, West Loop’s social scene is centered around incredible dining experiences and casual lounges rather than raucous bars and nightclubs. The one drawback is that it lacks direct CTA train access, meaning buses, biking, or walking are the primary modes of transportation. However, with so many world-class restaurants and amenities within walking distance, it’s easy to see why this neighborhood continues to grow in popularity.

  • Walkability Score: 96 – Extremely pedestrian-friendly, with excellent access to restaurants and shops.
  • Public Transit Score: 85 – Served primarily by buses and nearby CTA train stations.
  • Key Restaurants:
    • Girl & The Goat – One of Chicago’s most famous restaurants, offering globally inspired small plates.
    • Au Cheval – Known for having one of the best burgers in the city (and possibly the country).
    • Monteverde – A Michelin-starred Italian eatery specializing in handmade pasta.
    • Swift & Sons – A modern take on a classic steakhouse with top-notch service.

  • Gyms:
    • Equinox West Loop – A high-end gym with premium amenities and wellness services.
    • Mode Gym – A boutique fitness center offering personal training and state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Why I Might Live Here: The food scene is unbeatable, and the area has a relaxed yet upscale energy. However, the lack of a direct train stop might be a downside. I’ll need to explore more to see if the walkability makes up for it.

South Loop

South Loop is a dynamic mix of modern high-rises, historic lofts, and cultural attractions. The neighborhood is home to some of Chicago’s most significant landmarks, including the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Soldier Field. It offers a quieter residential feel compared to River North or the Loop while still providing easy access to downtown. The South Loop is ideal for those who want a mix of urban convenience and a more relaxed environment.

The area has seen rapid development in recent years, with new restaurants, cafes, and shopping options emerging. The biggest draw for me is its proximity to Lake Michigan and Grant Park, which offer green spaces and walking trails. The challenge? Some areas feel a bit spread out, making walkability more of a mixed bag compared to neighborhoods like West Loop.

  • Walkability Score: 91 – Walkable, but some areas are more spread out.
  • Public Transit Score: 88 – Well-connected by the CTA Red, Orange, and Green Lines.
  • Key Restaurants:

  • Gyms:
    • FFC South Loop – A well-equipped fitness club with a spa and rooftop deck.
    • LA Fitness – A solid, full-service gym with classes and personal training.
  • Why I Might Live Here: The mix of city and green space is appealing, and the newer buildings mean modern amenities. The question is whether it has enough of a neighborhood feel for daily living.

Gold Coast

Gold Coast is one of Chicago’s most elegant and historic neighborhoods. Known for its tree-lined streets, classic brownstones, and luxury high-rises, this area has long been a favorite for those seeking a refined urban lifestyle. It offers a quiet, residential feel while still providing easy access to world-class shopping, fine dining, and the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. Walking through Gold Coast feels like stepping back in time, with historic mansions and landmark buildings adding to its charm.

While Gold Coast is undeniably upscale, it doesn’t feel overly pretentious. The neighborhood’s proximity to Oak Street Beach and the Magnificent Mile makes it one of the best areas for both relaxation and convenience. It’s ideal for those who appreciate a more sophisticated, laid-back environment while still wanting access to everything Chicago has to offer.

Lakeshore East

Lakeshore East is one of Chicago’s newest and most well-planned neighborhoods. Tucked between The Loop and the lakefront, it offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of downtown. This master-planned community is known for its modern high-rises, beautifully designed parks, and breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. It’s an ideal neighborhood for those who want to be close to everything but still have access to green spaces and a quieter environment.

Because Lakeshore East was developed with walkability in mind, everything is conveniently located. The neighborhood features grocery stores, restaurants, and access to the Riverwalk, making it a perfect mix of city living and outdoor enjoyment. However, it’s a bit more isolated compared to some of the other downtown neighborhoods, which could be a plus or minus depending on what I’m looking for.

  • Why I Might Live Here: It’s a perfect blend of city life and tranquility, with easy access to green spaces and modern conveniences. However, I need to see if it feels too isolated from the more bustling areas of downtown.

Fulton Market

Fulton Market is an offshoot of the West Loop and has quickly become one of the hottest neighborhoods in Chicago. Originally home to meatpacking plants and warehouses, it has transformed into a vibrant district filled with trendy restaurants, upscale hotels, and high-end apartment buildings. With tech companies like Google and McDonald’s setting up headquarters here, the neighborhood has drawn an influx of professionals looking for modern, upscale living in a creative environment.

Despite its industrial past, Fulton Market has a stylish, polished feel. The cobblestone streets and converted warehouses give it character, while new developments add a fresh, sophisticated touch. Old Town

Old Town is one of Chicago’s most charming neighborhoods, blending historic architecture with a lively, welcoming atmosphere. It’s known for its tree-lined streets, classic brownstones, and thriving arts scene. The neighborhood is home to The Second City comedy club, boutique shops, and a variety of cozy cafes and restaurants. Unlike some of the high-rise-dominated areas downtown, Old Town offers a mix of mid-rise buildings, historic walk-ups, and modern apartments, making it a diverse and attractive place to live.

Old Town has a neighborhood feel that many parts of downtown lack, making it a strong contender for those looking for a quieter, more residential setting without being too far from the action. With its proximity to Lincoln Park and downtown, it offers an ideal blend of convenience and community charm.

Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park is one of Chicago’s most picturesque and beloved neighborhoods, offering a mix of urban energy and suburban tranquility. Known for its lush green spaces, historic architecture, and proximity to Lake Michigan, Lincoln Park provides an ideal balance between city life and nature. The neighborhood is home to the expansive Lincoln Park itself, which features miles of walking trails, a free zoo, and the stunning Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool. It’s also filled with charming streets, boutique shops, and some of the city’s best restaurants, making it a highly desirable place to live.

This neighborhood attracts a diverse crowd, from young professionals and students to families and retirees. Its appeal lies in its accessibility to downtown while maintaining a quieter, more residential feel. The area offers a mix of historic brownstones, mid-rise buildings, and a growing number of luxury high-rises, ensuring a variety of housing options. The only potential downside is that the cost of living in Lincoln Park tends to be on the higher side, but for many, the lifestyle and access to amenities make it worth it.

  • Gyms:
    • Equinox Lincoln Park – A high-end gym offering luxury fitness and wellness services.
    • FFC Lincoln Park – A well-rounded gym with group fitness classes and modern equipment.
  • Why I Might Live Here: The mix of green space, historic charm, and proximity to downtown make Lincoln Park one of the most appealing neighborhoods. However, I’ll need to explore if the quieter, more residential atmosphere feels right compared to the energy of other downtown neighborhoods.

Final Thoughts

After researching and compiling all this information, My Fiancee and I have a great starting point for our apartment hunt. Each neighborhood offers something unique, whether it’s the bustling energy of River North, the foodie paradise of West Loop, or the historic charm of Old Town. Over the next few months, we’ll visit these areas in person, tour apartments, and see which neighborhood truly feels like home. Stay tuned for updates on our journey!
